Sound
It feels impossible to imagine a drive without music or radio. But until Australia’s Kelly’s Motors installed the first car radio in 1924, the only sound was the road and the engine. With talk shows, custom playlists and hands-free phone calls, for many, audio in vehicles allows us to learn, enjoy, and put ourselves into our own little world for the duration of our trip—it allows us to get to know ourselves, and soothe the journey; while for others, competition dominates their audible experience. Sound is one of the most crucial elements of our daily driving experience, and we’re always given a brief reminder whenever it goes off.
